Forest of Dreams: Ainu and Native American Woodcarving

"The third show in the Portland Japanese Garden’s “Year of Hokkaido” unites the gorgeous carving traditions of indigenous peoples of Japan and the Pacific Northwest in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Portland and Sapporo becoming sister-cities. Intricately carved “Power Boards” are joined by handcrafted objects for everyday use. The exhibition explores the parallels between the traditions of the Ainu people of Hokkaido and the Tribes of the Columbia River Basin, revisiting the themes of the Garden’s 2008 textile-arts exhibition, Parallel Worlds." - Oregon Arts Watch
