      Red Mass - Dinner & Lecture

      Please join the Archdiocese of Portland on Saturday, September 28 for the 2019 Annual Red Mass Dinner & Lecture featuring the Honorable Mary Helen Marguia from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. 5:30 p.m. - Mass of the Holy Spirit will be offered for members of the legal profession in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and is open to all.  The Most Reverend Alexander K. Sample will be the principal celebrant and homilist. 7:00 p.m. - Dinner and Lecture with Judge Murguia at the Multnomah Athletic Club Judge Murguia was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit on January 4, 2011.  She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1982 and from the University of Kansas Law School in 1985.  She began her legal career as an assistant district attorney with the Wyandotte County District of Arizona and four years later was promoted to criminal chief deputy.  In 1998, she moved to Washington, D.C. and became counsel to the director of the Executive Office for United State Attorneys in the U.S. Department of Justice.  A year later, she was appointed director of that office.  In that capacity, she provided oversight and support to 94 U.S. Attorney's offices across the country.  In 2000, Judge Murguia was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, becoming the first Latina to serve as a federal district court judge in Arizona. A Red Mass is a Mass celebrated annually in the Catholic Church for all members of the legal profession, regardless of religious affiliation: judges, lawyers, law school professors, law students, and government officials, marking the opening of the judicial year.
